Book 1: Dragon Claw

Chapter 3

“Kelly.” A voice rang out in a brightly lit white room.

“Who is there?” Kelly asked looking around the room for someone. But she saw nobody, she didn’t even so much as see a door.

“I am.” the voice said this time from a specific location. Kelly heard it from behind herself. when she turned around she saw the dragon.

“You, you can talk?” Kelly asked.

“In here I can do anything.” The dragon replied. not moving his mouth as the voice still sounded like it came from him, a smooth calming voice.

“Here? Where is here? I mean where am I?” Kelly asked.

The dragon simply pointed to his own head. “We are here.” then he pointed to Kelly’s head “and here. We’re dreaming. We’re physically still in my home sleeping.”

“So you can enter my dreams? I must be going crazy. this is the weirdest dream I’ve had.” Kelly said.

“Please, Kelly. This, what I am doing right now. Entering another’s dream without their consent is highly forbidden for dragons...but I’ve been alone for almost a millennia I just need someone to talk to. someone who will understand when I talk to them. Even you didn’t understand when I was trying to help you. I mended your leg, when I felt you shiver I covered you with an extra skin, when I felt your hunger I tried to feed you. I feel so alone. I have no one to talk to, no one who will understand.” The dragon said sorrowfully it sounded as though he were crying though his face did show a sad expression he did not cry much more than a single tear.

“I’m sorry, but I was afraid of you. It’s kind of hard to understand the growling animal.” Kelly replied at first with a tone of pity, but then in a more defensive tone.

“Or maybe your species should have evolved telepathy and stopped using primitive animal sounds for communication.” The dragon said.

“So what’s your name?” Kelly asked.

This time the dragon did open his mouth while speaking and the name he gave sounded more like a roar. “Anepanor” He said.

Kelly thought about it for a moment then replied. “So your name is Anepanor?”

“Yes.” Anepanor said.

“How did you know mine was Kelly?” Kelly asked.

“I’m telepathic, sometimes I can “hear” people’s thoughts. By the way, that is what saved you. I can hear your thoughts we don’t eat animals whose thoughts we can hear because when we kill them we share the pain.” Anepanor said.

“So you couldn’t hear the deer’s thoughts, but you can hear my thoughts? what other animals on this planet can you hear?” Kelly asked.

“Apes and porpoises, I can hear the thoughts of dogs, pigs and elephants but they are much simpler.” Anepanor said.

“Wait so do you put dolphins at the same level as humans? And the other animals are stupider but you still don’t eat...” Kelly said.

Anepanor interrupted. “No, they aren’t “stupider” they are less complex. So they aren’t sitting around meditating on deep philosophical truths or questioning their own existence. They live for the moment they live for now. It makes their lives simpler, but they still have feelings and they still have emotions. Animals whose thoughts I cannot hear may also have emotions, but I wouldn’t understand them and as such I don’t have to feel their pain when killing them for food. I’m sure they suffer from some pain, but I don’t understand it and It’s either they die or I die.”

“Well I guess that’s life. But, are you serious about not eating me?” Kelly asked.

“One of the benefits to telepathy, is that it is impossible to lie. Well I suppose it could be considered a benefit, sometimes a fault. Though you don’t have telepathy so I cannot lie to you, but I can hide truths. The things I’ve revealed to you though, are truth as I see it.” Anepanor said.

“So you’ve been alone for a thousand years. What happened to the other dragons?” Kelly asked.

“I shouldn’t even be telling you this, but I will. Someone ought to know. I was out hunting one night and when I returned to my cave I found my mate, her head had been severed and our eggs were smashed. So I retaliated. I flew to the closest human village and I destroyed everything. I only spared one man, I spared him to let him suffer the same pain that I had felt finding my mate dead. That was the day I became a monster, that was when I realized how horrible my own existence on this planet was, so I put myself into exile. I found the furthest forest from any civilization and here I’ve been for a thousand years. I expect you fear me more hearing my story. I don’t expect you to forgive me and I don’t expect you to pity me.” Anepanor said.
Kelly held her hand to her mouth in disgust. She did not fear him more, she did pity him. She knew how it felt to need revenge. She put her own mother in prison for drug abuse after being abused by her for years living in her home. Kelly approached the dragon and she put her hand on his cheek. “No Anepanor, I do pity you. I understand what you must be going through and I’m sorry this happened to you. You were angry and frustrated.” She said as she pulled him closer. Anepanor allowed himself to be dragged into the woman’s arms and she hugged his neck.
